another violent night in chicago. two people killed and 11 wounded in several shootings around the city including the nephew of nba star dwayne wade. the worst of them was in the south side gresham's neighborhood. non-residents and nba star calling for a change. order was there for an anti violence rally today. >> as residents march and chant and pray outside the scene of a fatal shooting, wgn news was confirming reports of its most high-profile victim. the nephew of nba star dwyane wade among those shot and wounded last night. his age and condition unknown. a statement from the miami heat guard reading in part: 'my thoughts and prayers are with all involved, including my nephew and sister. having grown up in the inner-city, i am

detention center is built in their town. where we where not elicit this... >> just this week, the illinois senate approved a bill banning contracting with private companies to build or run civil is expected to face a tough challenge in the house. the chicago public schools decided friday just how it will phase in new teacher evaluation procedures. beginning in the fall as much as 1-quarter of a teacher's grade will be based on the performance of their students. in 5 years, it can be as high as 40 percent whichthe teachers union says is too high. teachers whose students don't get assessment tests, will be rated by the school's growth in reading scores. the teachers will also be judged on lesson plans & class instruction. a close call caught on tape. three firefighters pull eachother to safety when a burning rooftop collapses beneath them.

in tonight's medical watch, un- roasted coffee beans may hold the key to quick weight loss. researchers gave a small group of overweight people a dose of green coffee bean extract for 22-weeks. participants lost an average of 18 pounds. they also kept a low-fat diet

teenage shootings are up, graduation levels are down. chicago's youth are struggling but one school is constantly beating the odds. in fact 100% of urban prep's class of 2012 have been accepted to four year colleges and universities. tonight, we meet the man who's helping the city's graduation rates, one student at a time. wgn's micah materre, introduces us to tim king - one of chicago's very own. in the city of chicago there's about a 60% high school dropout rate and only 2.5% of african americans who start out in chicago public schools actually end up graduating from college with a bachelor's degree but at urban prep academy, it's a whole other story. >> the mission of urban prep is to prepare young men to succeed in college and so from the first moment they walk in our doors they're bombarded with this notion that you are going to be going to college and graduating from college. that's tim king. the man who

created the country's first all boy public charter high school back in 2006 in englewood. king says he wanted to build a school that was going to create positive change. now--that one school has turned into a network of schools--with three locations around chicago--placed in historically african american communities. >> our motto at urban prep is 'we believe' so we knew from day one we believe that what we are creating was going to change the city of chicago and change this country. over at urban prep's west campus, the students follow strict rules---wearing a suit and tie, addressing one another by surname--and spending more time in the classroom. actually--they end up racking up an entire extra year of studies by the time they graduate. >> we're a lottery school system so our students come to us woefully behind in many instances and our first graduating class for example only 4% of students came to us reading at grade level. so we do a lot to accelerate them in the classroom. we also require extracurricular participation to ensure they are well rounded individuals. and with some good ole fashioned competition and high

expectations, king says these kids are well on their way. >> its very motivational to be at a school like this where college is the main focus. because before i came to urban prep i wasn't' really thinking about what i was going to do in college, or even if i was going to go to college. it wasn't something that was on my mind. >> they always make you feel like you could go after school for help if you need it. and they always try to push you to your best, they make you do the best you can and before you know it the bell rings and you want to do more work. >> as i look at our african american staff the relationships we build with the students are great and they see us as positive role models we're so tight knit, we're best friends, we cry together we smile together, we laugh together so the entire environment is great. it's a family environment.
